Grand Erie Celebrates Asian Heritage Month

May is Asian Heritage Month. Grand Erie would like to take this opportunity to invite staff and students to celebrate and learn more about the many contributions that Asian Canadians have made to our community and to our country.

Since the 1990s, Asian Heritage Month has been a focus of celebration in many communities across Canada. In 2001, the Senate of Canada adopted a motion to designate May as Asian Heritage Month nationally and the Government of Canada made a formal declaration the following year. Over 30 countries make up the Asian and South Asian diaspora in Canada.

For the past 300 years, Canadians of Asian descent have made important contributions to our national identity and cultural fabric. To celebrate the month, Grand Erie invites educators to explore with their students the many aspects of Asian culture, history, science, cuisine, poetry, dance, sports, music and art.

During this time of social change, Grand Erie stands firm with the Asian community against all forms of racism, discrimination and hate. Such actions and behaviour have no place in our schools.

Grand Erie is lucky to be home to so many families and individuals from a wide variety of cultures, heritages and backgrounds. We will continue to celebrate our rich diversity and create safe and inclusive learning environments for all students and staff.

Happy Asian Heritage Month!
