THURSDAY, DEC. 21, 2023

n November, McKinnon Park Secondary students took on the Distributive Education Clubs of America’s (DECA) business competition at Brock University. Through applied learning and real-life insight, the program introduces high school students to a variety of concepts in marketing, finance, hospitality and management, building the foundation for post-secondary studies and a future business career.

Learners showcased their skills in several immersive challenges at the regional event, including multiple-choice career exams and a role-play or case study provided on-site with a judge.

Competing with more than 2,000 students from schools across southern Ontario, McKinnon Park took home awards in the following categories:

  • Financial Services - Blake Chapman and Brady Murphy
  • Sports and Entertainment Marketing - Amelia Morrison and Nicole Vanbesien
  • Hospitality Services - Isaac Dias and Judy Gao

Charly Watt and Dalton Martin took part in the Buying and Merchandising events and will be joining the rest of the group at Provincials in February.

“I am so proud of the hard work and courage shown by each DECA participant at the regional event,” shared Renee Reilly, Business Studies and eLearning teacher at McKinnon Park Secondary School, who acted as the team’s teacher-advisor, incorporating relevant information into her classroom instruction. “We’re really looking forward to representing McKinnon Park at provincials in February.”
