    Mental Health in Grand Erie

    Building a culture of Well-Being and Belonging are key priorities as part of Grand Erie’s Multi-Year Strategic Plan. Grand Erie’s Mental Health team partners with community organizations, educators and administrators across the district to support student mental health and well-being.

    • Recent world events can be upsetting for many. We have shared resources for parents to help their children manage traumatic events.

    Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan 

    Each school year, Grand Erie prepares and acts on a Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan. The 2021-22 Plan lays out four priorities, and activities to support those priorities:
     

    Priority #1:

    Increase the knowledge and skills of staff to better support learners in developing the capacity to tend to their own well-being.

    • Created resources and delivered professional learning and resources to Admin, educators and families for a Mentally Healthy Return to School.
    • Delivered professional learning in mental health literacy and well-being, self-regulation, and healthy relationships.
    • Delivered In-services at System Leaders meetings, PD workshops, Guidance Head meetings, LRT meetings, MH Leadership, Student Success meetings.
    • Created and maintaining the Mental Health & Wellness Digital Resource Binder on Brightspace.
       

    Priority #2:

    Provide students with the knowledge, skills and resources to tend to their own mental health & well-being.

    • Delivered classroom lessons and activities, co-facilitated by the teacher and the Child & Youth Worker, in social-emotional learning, healthy relationships, stress management and mental health literacy.
    • Including Child & Youth Workers as a part of In-School Teams and in support of the tiered approach to wellness.
    • Including Social Workers as a part of School and Resource Teams to consult on mental health concerns.
    • Social Workers providing direct support and service to students and families.
       

    Priority #3:

    Promulgate Suicide Risk Protocol and Non-Suicidal Self-Injurious Behaviours Protocol.

    • Providing In-services on Suicide Risk Protocol and Non-Suicidal Self-Injurious Behaviours Protocol.
    • Changed the pathway to care between McMaster Hospital and GEDSB to improve communication and allow for better protection of personal health information

    Priority #4:

    Develop common messaging and resources with Indigenous Education, K-12 Program, Safe & Inclusive Schools, Student Success and Tech.

    • Collaboration with Interdisciplinary teams to support common messaging and the development of resources
