Caledonia Area

Caledonia Boundary Region

Boundary Review

On January 27, 2025, the Grand Erie District School Board Trustees approved attendance area boundary changes for the new Caledonia elementary school, which will open in September 2025.

This new elementary boundary includes the existing Avalon development and portions of the current Seneca Central Public School boundary. As a result of the new boundary, students would be transferred from Caledonia Centennial Public School, Seneca Central Public School, and J.L. Mitchener Public School to the new Caledonia elementary school effective September 2025. A legacy option is available for students entering Grade 8 to ease the transition for students and families. These students could remain at their current school for the 2025-26 school year or attend the new Caledonia elementary school. Students choosing the legacy option would be provided transportation should they meet the transportation eligibility criteria.

Frequently Asked Questions

My child is currently in the elementary French Immersion program at River Heights. What happens?
There is no change to the French Immersion program catchment area. The program will remain at River Heights.
Does the new elementary school have a name?
Not yet! Grand Erie has embarked on a process of public consultation to seek name suggestions for the new school. The procedure governing school naming offers considerations that may apply when naming a school, including local geography, streets, historical names or events, or an individual with an outstanding and enduring contribution to the Grand Erie educational community. Names should also reflect Grand Erie’s mission to build a culture of learning, well-being and belonging to inspire each student. Name suggestions are being received until February 6, 2025. Visit here to submit your idea.
Who will be the principal at the new elementary school?

Mark Fraser, an experienced school leader with a long history of fostering welcoming, inclusive learning spaces for students and families in Grand Erie, will serve as administrator at the new elementary school.

Will the new school have childcare available, and if so, how can families apply?
Yes, the new school will have a childcare component incorporated into the facility. The facility operator will be Today’s Family. To register for a childcare space, please do so via Haldimand Norfolk OneList. Today's Family will track interest for the new Caledonia childcare and before- and after-school program. Registration and inquiries should go through their placement department: childcare@todaysfamily.ca.
I live in the new boundary but have already registered my child for Kindergarten at JL Mitchener, now what?
For families in the new boundary who have registered for Kindergarten at JL Mitchener, your registration will be transferred to the new elementary school. In the coming weeks, families will receive information for orientation events to help families prepare for this important transition.
Will transportation be available to students?

Transportation will be provided based on Grand Erie’s Student Transportation Policy (TR-02).

Can students continue in their current school if they are in the new school boundary?
Students entering Grade 8 in the 2025-26 school year have the option to remain at their current school. These students would continue to be provided transportation, if eligible (i.e., currently receiving).
How will students with special education needs be supported?
Grand Erie supports all students to access learning opportunities in their community schools, including students with Individual Education Plans. All students transitioning to a new school are supported and will receive the necessary resources to participate fully at their designated school.
How will students be supported transitioning schools?
A Transition Working Committee will be formed to support all students and staff moving between schools. More information will be shared with families in the coming weeks.
What do I need to do to register at the new Caledonia elementary school?

Current Grand Erie students located in the new boundary area will move to the new Caledonia elementary school in September 2025.

When will the new school be completed?
The new school is on track to be completed and ready for occupancy for the first day of school for 2025-26.
