Brooke Macdonald, a Grade 12 student at Pauline Johnson Collegiate and Vocational School, has been awarded a prestigious scholarship through Western University's   National Indigenous Scholarship Program, valued at $50,000.

"I've definitely found my passion: I'll be studying kinesiology this fall with plans to go into sports or chiropractic medicine," says Macdonald, who has balanced her studies with playing and coaching lacrosse with the Six Nations team, as well as a co-op in athletic therapy at McMaster University.

The program awards five $50,000 scholarships annually to incoming Indigenous undergraduate students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, leadership, innovative thinking, and meaningful contributions to Indigenous communities — all areas she plans to continue to make an impact.

"Many Indigenous communities on reserve don't have the same access to specialized healthcare services that the rest of the country does; so increasing access to these services is really important to me," she says.

The National Indigenous Scholarship Program recognizes First Nations, Métis and Inuit students for their academic excellence, as well as achievements and commitment outside the classroom. Macdonald credits her time as a student at Pauline Johnson with helping her reach her goals.

"My teachers, parents and coaches are the ones who have raised me to be the person I am today," she says. "The teachers here really care about your success — they are here to make sure you become the best person you can be. Not just the best students or the best athletes, but well-rounded people who want to make a positive difference in the world."
