Richard Humpartzoomian, a science teacher at North Park Collegiate and Vocational School, has won the prestigious honour of Champion Teacher for 2025, presented by the Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF).

"Richard's teaching exemplifies what it means to learn, lead and inspire, and he's opened many doors over the years for students to succeed in science and technology fields," said Stephen Wills, principal at North Park. "The award is a very big deal in science education, and he is incredibly worthy of this honour."

Educators are nominated by students who attest to the positive impact on their learning and inspiring their pursuits in science studies. Humpartzoomian was singled out for his ability to consistently go above and beyond in supporting learners, recognizing their unique strengths, encouraging ideas and innovative thinking, and building confidence and achievement as they work towards high-level academic success.

"North Park has been attending the Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair for many years, and more recently, we have excelled in the computer science division with strong projects in artificial intelligence and robotics," said Humpartzoomian of his students' achievements. "I am thankful for the opportunity to mentor such talented learners who demonstrate the technical skill and perseverance to accomplish truly amazing things."

The BASEF is a launching pad for learners in Grades 7 to 12 to present their research and innovative ideas, engage with the scientific community and receive feedback from judges who are often experts in their respective fields. It encourages scientific inquiry, skills development and real-world applications.

Grand Erie's multi-year strategic plan includes the collective priority of nurturing curiosity and opportunity for each student, and the BASEF Champion Teacher honour is a testament to this goal.
