Jennifer Montague

Chair, Grand Erie Parent Involvement Committee for 2024-25

Please share your background and what inspired you to join the Grand Erie Parent Involvement Committee (GEPIC).

I began my involvement with parent councils in 2007 at Jarvis Public School, later transitioning to JL Mitchener Public School, where I was nominated as Chair in 2015.

As Chair, I wanted to deepen my understanding of procedures, processes, and best practices to lead my council effectively. I began attending board events, which allowed me to gain valuable insights and resources. At one of these events, the Chair of GEPIC encouraged me to join the committee.

What motivated you to take on the role of Chair this year?

While I had some initial nerves about stepping into the role, I have been a long-standing member of GEPIC and have had the privilege of observing exceptional individuals lead the committee successfully. Their dedication and leadership inspired me to take on the position. My experience and knowledge will allow me to make a meaningful contribution and continue fostering collaboration within the group.

What is your vision for GEPIC in the coming year as Chair?

As Chair, my vision is to strengthen connections between schools, councils, and communities across the Grand Erie District. Our region encompasses a diverse and vibrant network of schools, all doing remarkable work, and I aim to use GEPIC as a platform to bring people together. By fostering alignment and collaboration among families, educators, and community members, we can collectively contribute to student success and achievement.

How do you plan to engage with the school community and families to ensure their voices are heard in GEPIC work?

I aim to create a more interactive and engaging platform where school communities can connect, share ideas, and collaborate with GEPIC. We will continue offering the speaker series online, which has been well-received, and encourage families to provide feedback through accessible channels, such as email. By creating opportunities for open dialogue, we hope to better understand the needs and priorities of our communities.

How do you see GEPIC working in partnership with educators, families, and community organizations to support students?

This year, GEPIC actively supports schools by offering PRO grants to fund parent engagement initiatives. These grants can be used for various events, such as inviting guest speakers, hosting school showcase events, or organizing interactive math or art nights. Additionally, our ongoing speaker series features a range of experts covering diverse topics to help families and educators collaborate effectively to support student well-being and achievement.

Can you share an example of an initiative or project you have been involved in to support students?

A few years ago, our school community undertook a significant project to build a playground area specifically designed for junior and intermediate students. The goal was to create a space that promoted physical activity, social interaction, and opportunities for students to take breaks, recharge, and enjoy being kids.

The project took several years to complete and involved overcoming challenges like leadership transitions and logistical barriers. However, we successfully brought the vision to life through perseverance, strong communication, and collaboration with community members. This initiative provided a valuable resource for students and strengthened our connections with the broader community, which we continue to nurture today.

What advice would you give to parents or caregivers looking to get more involved?

I encourage parents and caregivers to start by attending a meeting or event or simply reaching out to their school's administrator or parent council. There are many opportunities to get involved that fit within their availability, and any level of participation can make a difference.

Engaging in your child's education provides invaluable insights into how the school operates and what resources are available to support students and families. Schools are not just institutions; they are communities, and being part of that community is incredibly rewarding.

What is a fun fact about yourself that people might not know?

A fun fact about me is that I have a wide range of interests and enjoy exploring new experiences, whether trying different foods, discovering new forms of entertainment, or volunteering and getting involved in the community. I believe in embracing opportunities to learn and grow, and I like to think of life as an ongoing adventure. No matter our age, we are all students of life, and I strive to live by that mantra.
