The Health & Wellness Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)

The Health & Wellness SHSM program caters to students who are interested in pursuing health care studies after graduation. It gives students an advantage through the “red seal” that appears on the student transcript. Through courses geared toward health care, various certifications (e.g. First Aid, CPR, etc.), experiential learning (e.g. job shadowing), and “reach ahead” activities (e.g. various field trips), North Park students receive many opportunities to explore the field of health care before graduation from high school.

Science Contests

North Park science students have many opportunities each year to participate in academic contests through institutions such as: the University of Waterloo, the University of Windsor, the University of Toronto and the Ontario Association of Physics Teachers.

Biology

  • The University of Toronto’s National Biology Competition (grade 11 and 12 students).  See www.biocomp.utoronto.ca for more information.

The Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF)

The Bay Area Science & Engineering Fair (BASEF) is one of the oldest and largest science fairs in Canada. For almost 60 years, BASEF has provided a forum for students to develop their scientific skills and prepare for national and international competition.

BASEF draws students from grades 7 through 12 from the City of Hamilton (including Ancaster, Dundas and Stoney Creek) and the Regional Municipality of Halton (including Burlington, Oakville and Milton) in Southern Ontario. Students from Haldimand, Norfolk and Brant
Counties have participated since 2003.

Participating students begin working on their projects in September - at the beginning of a new school year. The actual science fair takes place over the course of four days in March, starting with project set up on Wednesday, student activities and judging on Thursday, and culminating with the public viewing on Saturday followed by the awards ceremony a few days later. Top winners go on to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and the Canada-Wide Science Fair.

Two types of awards are presented at BASEF: “Special Awards” given out by various companies, universities/colleges, and other sponsors and “Merit Awards” in the form of bronze, silver and gold medals awarded by BASEF judges and based on points acquired by the projects. Students from North Park have been participating at BASEF since 2004 and we have a great history of many awards, medals and students who have gone on to the Canada-wide and international science fairs!

We are looking forward to a strong BASEF Team from NPC in the next school year!

If you are interested in participating, speak with your science teacher!

Also, see www.basef.ca for more information.
