The Grand Erie District School Board is seeking additional feedback from the community for the elementary French Immersion Program.

The French Immersion Special Ad Hoc Committee was established on April 11, 2022, and has met three times. The committee's initial work included gathering feedback from various groups through surveys and interviews, which was used to guide phase one recommendations. At the October 2024 Policy and Program Committee Meeting, a summary of the consultation report and feedback (page 20) were shared along with phase one recommendations.

The Committee’s report stated that:

  • The existing program is placing an enrolment burden on several schools.
  • The growth in some programs is not sustainable.
  • There is high demission from the early grades and 29% overall by the end of Grade 8.

The Committee’s recommendations for next steps in elementary FI were:

  • Remove lotteries for families by adhering to current February registration timelines. Registrations after February will be addressed case by case.
  • Review benefits and challenges of Kindergarten entry into FI.
  • Review the dual-track and single-track model.
