What Will You Be When You Grow Up? Helping New Grand Erie Kindergarten Families

Starting school for the first time is one of the most significant milestones for children and their families. This year, we are pleased to feature the following picture book, "What Will You Be When You Grow Up?" by author C.C. Lacavera.

Every day, from a young age, children are asked the simple but difficult question about their future. The book encourages students to imagine themselves in diverse roles, from educators, electricians and plumbers to healthcare professionals, first responders, entrepreneurs, and creative artists. By demonstrating that every role contributes meaningfully to society, the story shows children that whether they aspire to build bridges, run for office, or perform on stage, their potential is limitless.

Perfect for reading aloud, the heartwarming story promotes active listening, encourages storytelling, and nurtures a stronger parent-child connection. This book also supports home-to-school conversation and encourages children to see each day as an opportunity for discovery.

For Grand Erie, the initiative supports both the transition to school and the district’s focus on early learning. “Inspiring young minds to imagine their future possibilities is at the heart of what we do every day,” says Dr. JoAnna Roberto, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Education Officer. “Books like this build literacy skills while reminding students that their potential is limitless and that educators and employees are here to support them every step of the way.”

Grand Erie hopes to ease the nerves that often come with starting school while sparking excitement and curiosity that allow each student to dream they can be Larger than Life. For more Kindergarten resources, families can visit granderie.ca/kindergarten.
