Program Objectives

  • GradeK.gifHalf day, face-to-face skill-building program for students in Kindergarten with a diagnosis of Autism. The focus of this program is to prepare Kindergarten students for school entry, and allow them additional opportunities to practice school-specific skills in the classroom environment to assist with transitioning to a new school
  • Focus on social and communication skills, development of classroom routines and expectations
  • The program will be implemented by a teacher and an Educational Assistant or Designated Early Childhood Educator
  • All programs will be supervised by a Principal or Vice-Principal
  • Data gathering to support school entry will occur (i.e., assessment information regarding communication skills, social skills, academic/school readiness, etc.)
  • Programs require a minimum of two students, up to a maximum of four.
     

Student Selection: 

  • Will benefit students who require transition support to Kindergarten prior to school start-up
  • Students selected will demonstrate a need for support in the areas of:
    • Self-regulation
    • Behaviour management and/or
    • Social skills and/or social interactions
       

When:

  • August 23-27, 2021
     

Where:  

  • Priority given to 16 identified schools with a higher population of special education students starting JK, based on information provided by Haldimand-Norfolk REACH and Lansdowne Children’s Centre
  • Program runs in the home school, in the area or classroom deemed most appropriate.

Hello Classroom Program

Program Objectives

  • GradesK-12.gifTransition support for students in Intensive Support – Autism and Life Skills classes (Elementary & Secondary)
  • Opportunities for students to visit their classroom in-person before the first day of school. Teachers would have the environment set up and transition materials prepared (i.e. visual schedules, social narrative, reinforcement opportunities, etc.)
  • During visit(s) to the classroom, the student would participate in transition activities (i.e. tour of the classroom/school, reviewing expectations, sharing social narrative, etc.) and participate in a structured and reinforcing activity with the self-contained classroom teacher
     

Student Selection:

  • Offered to all students in Life Skills and Intensive Support – Autism classes (priority to students who have been attending virtually for the past year)
     

When:

  • August 23-26, 2021
     

Where:

  • Programs run in the home school, in the self-contained classroom

Summer Opportunities Supporting Student Mental Health

Student Mental Health Services Program

Program Objectives:

  • GradesK-12.gifProvide school-based mental health services for students during July and August
  • Social Workers will provide students, parents and families with knowledge and skills that supports student mental health and well-being
  • Social Workers will support referrals to community based mental health care for students requiring more intensive supports
  • Social Workers will also support the return to school
     

Student Selection:

  • Available to all Grand Erie students
  • Summer Social Work Referral Form is completed during the spring or summer months by a school Administrator or teacher
  • Students attending summer school and Camp Sail will have access to this program
     

When:

  • July and August
     

Where:

  • The program will primarily be delivered virtually, but there may be in-person support depending on need.

Summer School Transition Program (SSTP)

Program Objectives

  • GradesSK-3.gifHalf day, face-to-face skill-building program for students in Senior Kindergarten up to Grade 3 that will support them in the development of skills to transition back to school in a positive, structured and confident manner
  • The program will be implemented by a teacher and an Educational Assistant or Designated Early Childhood Educator, with Child and Youth Worker Support
  • All programs will be supervised by a Principal and Vice-Principal
  • In order to run, programs require a minimum of three students, and programs are capped at eight students
     

Student Selection:

  • The SSTP will benefit students who require a return to school in a smaller, structured group on a reduced schedule. 
  • Students selected will demonstrate a need for support in the areas of:
    • Self-Regulation
    • Behaviour Management and/or
    • Social Skills and/or Social Interactions
  • Requires support or direction during transitional times in the day
  • Has the ability to learn skills quickly when in a small group setting
  • Will benefit from short, enhanced practice opportunities
  • Can respond to reinforcement schedules
  • May have designated shared EA support when returning to school
  • May have a BeSafe plan, but does not require the use of Personal Protective Equipment

  • August 23-27, 2021

Camp SAIL (Current Grades 2, 3 and 4)

Grades2-4.gifSummer Adventures in Learning returns, with a virtual summer camp focused on building skills in literacy and numeracy to help bridge the gap between the end of the school year and the start of a new year. The fun, supportive environment will provide students with a jumpstart on learning.
 

What is Camp SAIL?

  • A free virtual summer camp that runs for three weeks in July
  • Camp days will focus on supporting students developing their numeracy and literacy skills. Grand Erie teachers will provide fun and engaging activities to help students practice and enhance their skills and strategies
  • All activities and materials for participation in the camp will be provided
     

Who is Camp SAIL for?

  • Students who are currently in Grades 2, 3 and 4.
  • Interested families are asked to complete the FORMS survey link found here.
    Please complete a FORMS link for each child.

All are welcome!
 

When is Camp SAIL?

The half-day camp runs from 9 a.m. to 11: 30 a.m. five days a week for three weeks, from Monday, July 5 until Friday, July 23.
 

Where is Camp Sail?

Camp SAIL will be held virtually. Students will need to have access to a device and the internet for the instructional time that the camp is offered. If students require access to a device or to the internet, please indicate this on the registration link.

Reading Skills Development through Lexia

Program Objectives

  • Grades2-8.gifStudent directed skills practice through the Lexia online reading program (existing or new licenses)
  • A classroom teacher will monitor student progress and provide individual or small-group lessons once per week, if recommended by the Lexia program
  • To reduce reading skills gaps
     

Student Selection:

  • Students in Grades 2 – 8 with demonstrated gaps in reading skills who already have a Lexia license or who do not have a Lexia license may be nominated by the home school
  • Parents may request participation by expressing interest to the home school principal
  • Students must have access to an updated computer device or iPad (SEA, classroom, personal) and the internet in order to use the Lexia program
  • Programs will only run with sufficient student interest
     

When:

  • Ongoing throughout the summer; students will complete Lexia units at their own pace
  • A teacher will monitor student progress; when Lexia flags a student as requiring intervention, the teacher will connect virtually with the student to provide individual or small-group instruction

Technology Journeys in Math through LEARNStyle

Program Objectives

  • Grades4-8.gifFive day, two-hours-per-day virtual skill-building program for students in Grades 4 – 8 to increase independence, confidence, self-esteem, and positive attitudes toward math
  • To create a private math journal website to record strategies, assistive technology tools, and reflections as math learners and transfer this resource back to in-class learning
  • To explore and practice assistive technology tools that support comprehension, mathematical thinking, and problem solving
  • To reinforce literacy and math skills
     

Student Selection:

  • Students with demonstrated gaps in math skills will be nominated by their home schools, with commitment to participate from parents
  • Students must have access to a computer device (SEA, classroom, personal) and internet for the duration of the program
  • Programs will only run with sufficient student interest
     

When:

  • August 23 – 27
     

Where:

  • Virtual – A LEARNStyle coach will connect with you and your child prior to camp for introductions and video conferencing tips and to ensure a smooth start the first day. 
  • LEARNStyle will reach out to families via email, so please provide schools with a current email address in the weeks prior to camp.

Assistive Technology Literacy Camp through LEARNStyle

Program Objectives

  • Grades4-12.gifFive day, two-hours-per-day virtual skill-building program for students in Grades 4 – 12 to increase independence, confidence, and self-advocacy through technology and literacy skills practice
  • To build and enhance literacy skills in an engaging, online environment
  • To explore strategies utilizing technology tools for written output and reading comprehension
  • To build a student profile website to house discoveries of technology learning strategies
     

Student Selection:

  • Students with demonstrated gaps in literacy skills will be nominated by their home schools, with commitment to participate from parents
  • Students must have access to a computer device (SEA, classroom, personal) and internet for the duration of the program
  • Students will be grouped by grade division (Junior 4-6, Intermediate 7-8, Senior 9-12)
  • Programs will only run with sufficient student interest
     

When:

  • August 16 – 20
     

Where:

  • Virtual – a LEARNStyle coach will connect with you and your child prior to camp for introductions and video conferencing tips, and to ensure a smooth start the first day. For students in Grades 6-12, summer learning opportunities offer a chance to get caught up, get ahead, explore a new subject or change pathways.

A variety of options are available, including

  • Literacy/Numeracy and Reach Ahead courses for students in Grades 6, 7 and 8 most commonly referred to as real time and online interaction using Teams and BrightSpace
  • eLearning courses for students in Grades 10 to 12
  •  Credit Upgrade courses and Credit Recovery courses for secondary school students. 
     

Overview of Opportunities for Students in Grade 6-12:

Elementary Literacy-Numeracy Program (Eligible for students currently in Grades 6-8) provides pupils the opportunity to improve their basic skills in Literacy and Numeracy. The program uses the hybrid format involving synchronous and asynchronous learning.. 

  • Wednesday, July 7 to Wednesday, July 28, 2021 – 3 weeks - Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.

Secondary School Credit Courses

eLearning courses

eLearning Courses are offered to students in Grade 9 to 12. Students will have a choice of approximately 50 courses available at the time of registration. eLearning courses can run with smaller numbers than face-to-face classes, allowing students to take courses they may not have access to during the regular school year. 

  • Tuesday, July 6 to Friday, July 30, 2021 - Orientation begins June 29, 2021.  Coursework begins July 6th.

Reach Ahead 

Opportunities are offered to Grades 7 and 8 students who wish to acquire a secondary school credit prior to their official enrolment.  * Current Grade 7 and 8 students will use the Secondary Credit Registration button below.

  • Tuesday, July 6 to Friday, July 30, 2021  - Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Al Includes 2 breaks
  • All Reach Ahead courses are full - you will be contacted if you are on a waiting list - your patience is appreciated!
     

Credit Recovery Courses

Students must be recommended by your Guidance Counsellor. *Students will use the Secondary Credit Registration button below.

  • Wednesday, July 7 to Friday, July 16, 2021 – 8 days - Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
     

Credit Upgrades 

Offerings will be made available in core subject areas for Grades 9 – 12. These will run through the real time and online interaction model (Hybrid).

*Grade 9 and 10 courses will be offered using a hybrid format (synchronous support for 2 hours, with asynchronous time to complete work) *

Focus on Youth 

FocusOnYouth-Flyer_2021-angled.pngProgramming will provide students the opportunity for summer employment, in partnership with various community organizations and tutoring opportunities for some students. Students will gain valuable leadership skills, make connections within their home communities, and develop employment skills. Co-op credits may also be earned. This program is only available to full time students in Brantford and Brant County. Participation for the program is through an application process through Home School.

On Reserve In-Person Summer Programming:

2319 3rd Line Road, Ohsweken, ON

Indigenous Grade 8 Literacy/Numeracy Program

This program provides on reserve Indigenous pupils the opportunity to improve their skills in Literacy and Numeracy. The program will be face to face and is available to current Grade 8 students going into Grade 9 to support the transition to secondary school. Transportation is available.

  • Wednesday, July 7 to Wednesday, July 28, 2021 – 3 weeks - Monday to Friday, approx. 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Indigenous Grade 11 GPP3O (Leadership and Peer Support) Program

This course prepares students to act in leadership and peer support roles. They will design and implement a plan for contributing to their school and/or community; develop skills in communication, interpersonal relations, teamwork, and conflict management; and apply those skills in leadership and/or peer support roles. Transportation is available.

  • Tuesday, July 6 to Friday, July 30, 2021 - Monday to Friday, approx. 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Drop-In Support

Daily drop-in support is available Monday-Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.  at the Community Based Learning Centre (CBLC) 2319 3rd Line Road, Ohsweken to students enrolled in any online and eLearning summer learning programs through GELA. These drop-in supports are available to all Indigenous students via Grand Erie Cultural Mentors and transportation is available by calling at least 24 hours in advanced at:

Transportation for drop ins will be arranged with advanced notice only.

High School Transition Program through LEARNStyle

  • Grade8.gifFive day, two-hours-per-day virtual skill-building program for students in Grade 8 to increase confidence and independence with managing workload, staying on top of tasks, and becoming a more effective reader and writer
  • To develop the tools and strategies that are key to a successful high school experience
  • To explore technology tools for organization, reading text with meaning, and writing their best work
  • To strengthen self-advocacy skills

  • Regular classroom students with demonstrated gaps in literacy skills and/or organization skills will be nominated by their home schools, with commitment to participate from parents
  • Students must have access to a computer device (SEA, classroom, personal) and internet for the duration of the program

Summer Learning Opportunities for Students with Special Education Needs

Summer learning programs for students with special education needs will be provided to students with specific learning profiles. Below is a description of the programs being offered in some Grand Erie schools. Your school principal will reach out to you if the program becomes available in your school, and believes that your child would benefit from participating.

High School Drop-Ins for SEA Students

Program Objectives

  • Grades9-12.gifOne hour drop-in micro sessions to equip secondary students with strategies to utilize the appropriate assistive technology in areas of greatest need to foster independence and build confidence
  • Sample Skill Highlights:
    • Creative Writing
    • Writing essays, reports, and presentations
    •  Idea generation; how do I get started?
    • Reading handouts, instructions, and test questions
    • Researching for information gathering and organizing the information
    • Test and study skills
    • Time management
    • Grade 12 Focus: Job hunting and resumes; emails, organization, and time management; presentations and academic essays; and increased volume of reading
       

Student Selection:

  • High-school aged students, especially those who are assigned SEA computer equipment (and their parents), will be notified about the drop-in program topics, dates, and times
  • Students must have access to a computer to participate – students who plan to participate in drop-in sessions should make arrangements with the high school LRT to take their equipment home over the summer

Mental Health for the Return to School: Virtual Parent/Caregiver Workshops

Program Objectives

  • Deliver school-based resources and presentations to parents/guardians that supports students’ mental health and well-being.
  • Provide knowledge and skill development for transitions, coping strategies, self-care and community resources. 
     

Understanding and Supporting  Anxiety as Students Return to School (Elementary)

  • This workshop is designed for parents/caregivers of elementary-aged students who are experiencing anxiety. 
  • Tuesday August 17, 2021 from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m.
     

Understanding and Supporting Anxiety as Students Return to School (Secondary)

  • This workshop is designed for parents/caregivers of secondary-aged students who are experiencing anxiety.  
  • Thursday August 19, 2021 from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m.
     

Making the Return to School Successful and Fun

  • This workshop will provide parents/caregivers with strategies to help increase the likelihood of a successful return to in-person learning
  • Wednesday August 25, 2021 from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Objectives

  • Outreach by a school attendance counsellor to vulnerable students and their families with known attendance issues
  • To support an organized and successful start to the school year
