Learn Lead Inspire Award

Jason Dale, Simcoe Composite School

It is with great pride that we recognize Jason Dale of Simcoe Composite School’s Guidance and Student Services department for his commitment over the years to equity, inclusion and experiential learning through travel. For the past 15 years, Jason has played an instrumental role in organizing and leading immersive, safe and well-planned travel experiences for students, recognizing these out-of-classroom experiences as a powerful tool for education through exposure to diverse cultures, perspectives and opportunities beyond their rural communities. While travel can be an expensive privilege out of reach for many, Jason has worked to ensure that financial barriers do not get in the way of learners’ chances to participate, learn and grow from these journeys. His efforts have shaped a generation of students who not only understand the importance of equity and inclusion but who have lived it firsthand. Whether travelling to the birthplace of democracy, the battlefields of world wars or the stark places that remind us of our humanity, the impact of Jason’s work will undoubtedly continue to resonate in the lives of his students for years to come.

Student Showcase: Tech is Grand

The recent Tech Is Grand skills event offered a unique opportunity for Grand Erie students to demonstrate their exceptional abilities within specific skilled trades. To kick off the May board meeting, secondary students who had taken part in the event showcased work in the disciplines of culinary arts, floristry, welding, woodworking, aesthetics and hair design, transportation, graphic design, 2D design and 3D modeling. The event was not just a platform for showcasing talent; it emphasized the importance of skill development, creative problem-solving and collaboration while encouraging engagement in technical fields and supporting the growth of a strong and skilled workforce for the future.

Congratulations to Caleb Rogers, Josephine Crawford, Quinton Best, Ekovo Hall, Kohen Mann, Abigail Letendre, Katelyn O'Brien, Aislinn Burke, Brody Shaw-Stackhouse and Preston Hill for representing Grand Erie so well. We would also like to acknowledge Brooke-Lynn Criddle-Brown, Wishv Jitendrakumar Patel and Alexandra Ferriera from Pauline Johnson Collegiate & Vocational School in representing Grand Erie in culinary arts and restaurant service, placing top in the regional qualifiers at the Ontario Skills Competition. Finally, congratulations to Zachary Abell from Simcoe Composite who earned silver in floristry at the Ontario Skills Event on May 6.

Construction Update: Elgin Avenue Public School

The transformation of Elgin Avenue Public School is one step closer following the contract awarded for a general contractor, well within the amount estimated for this project in the capital budget. The construction will transform the school as it gets set to welcome learners from West Lynn Public School. The renovation construction will expand the size of the existing school by 17,000 square feet that will encompass a four-classroom kindergarten addition, an accessible entrance with a new elevator, a new three-room childcare and EarlyON space and an expanded outdoor play area.

Final Student Senate Meeting

In early May, Student Trustees hosted their final student senate meeting of the school year, bringing together student senators for each Grand Erie secondary school to finalize initiatives, reflect on their progress and discuss future plans. Student Trustees Aidyn Hill, Olivia Prince and Caitlyn Shields led working groups focused on mental health and well-being, equity, diversity and inclusion, and student voice. Guest speakers from Grand Erie’s School Culture and Well-Being team discussed mental health, adding valuable insights to the discussions on managing stress and understanding where stress comes from. They promoted mental health resources within the board, as well as stress-management strategies for students to consider.

Director’s Report Highlights

Mental Health Week

The first week of May marked Mental Health Week, with a theme this year of "Unmasking Mental Health." The week encourages school communities to recognize the stigmas that still exist, and work toward embracing honesty for a more understanding society. Mental Health Week at Waterford Public School saw a glow party, with students unleashing creativity and physical activity while learning about mental health and well-being strategies. Meanwhile, a collaborative art project at Dunnville Secondary School saw students expressing emotions without words as part of Mental Health Week. The art was arranged in a wave, an idea provided by the student council aligning with the well-being concept of riding the wave of emotions when experiencing intense and complex feelings.

The week concluded with Wellness Out Loud, the third annual event bringing together more than 200 student wellness ambassadors from each Grand Erie secondary school and dozens of elementary schools in a collective effort to build strong foundations around mental health and well-being across the board.

Ribbon-cutting Launches Waterford Intermediate Campus

The wider Grand Erie community recently celebrated the success of the Intermediate Campus at Waterford District High School with an official ribbon cutting. Grade 7 and 8 students from Waterford Public School have moved into an unused wing of Waterford District High School, easing population pressures at the elementary school and allowing intermediate students a valuable experience that eases the transition to secondary school.

Educator Receives eLearning Honour

Grand Erie educator Lynn Thomas, Teacher Consultant for eLearning, was honoured earlier this month by the Ontario eLearning Consortium. Thomas received the Technological Development for eLearning award, recognizing her highly collaborative approach to taking digital tools and making them work most effectively and accessibly for educator and learner success.

Project SEARCH Community Partner Honoured

In Brantford, Joseph’s Lifecare Centre, a host organization for Grand Erie’s successful Project SEARCH program, was recently honoured with the 2025 AdvantAge Ontario Community Connections award. The honour recognizes its work through initiatives such as Project SEARCH as a transformative development initiative designed to prepare young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities for meaningful employment. This province-wide honour celebrates organizations that champion inclusive, community-based partnerships that improve lives and build stronger communities.

Multi-Year Plan Stories

In 2021, Grand Erie approved a new strategic direction to guide the work that the school board is doing. At the centre of this multi-year plan is the vision to Learn, Lead and Inspire, and a mission to build a culture of Learning, Well-Being and Belonging for each learner.
