Students, employees and community members from the newly opened Blanche E. Williams Public School gathered Thursday afternoon to cut the ribbon, officially marking the completion of the major building project.

Students, staff and community members gathered to cut the ribbon to officially open Blanche E. Williams Public School, community centre and Shellard Lane library branch.

"The completion of this building isn’t just about a physical space; it represents a vision of an inclusive, supportive and enriching learning environment to serve Brantford students and families," said Brian Doyle, Chair of the Board. "On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank the incredible employees at Grand Erie and Blanche E. Williams, and the families and community members who share in this vision."

The community hub partnership between the Grand Erie District School Board, the City of Brantford, the Brantford Public Library and BGC Brantford features an elementary school, recreation centre, public library, childcare and other amenities to serve the growing community.

“This is an investment in students and their future, creating a welcoming, supportive and innovative environment where every generation of learners can thrive for decades to come,” said Dr. JoAnna Roberto, Chief Executive Officer. “I’m inspired by the thoughtful planning, expertise and collaboration to create this community learning hub model, and the lasting impact they will have on students, their learning experiences and their future success.”

Blanche E. Williams Public School is the home of the Trailblazers – a name chosen by this school community to represent who they are. The Brantford resident made headlines in the 1880s for being one of the first Black women in Canada to attend university with the same privileges as white students.

Notes Roberto, "This is all for the students, and now Blanche E. Williams Public School will be a place where you ask bold questions, lean into challenges and grow into the leaders of tomorrow."

The new school is home to more than 600 students in Kindergarten to Grade 8, a 64-space child-care centre operated by BGC Brantford, within the 108,000-square-foot building. The property also includes Shellard Lane Library Branch to serve the school and the community at large, and features 13,500 square feet of programming space, study rooms, and an outdoor reading terrace. Blanche E. Williams Community Centre features four gymnasiums and meeting spaces. Additional amenities scheduled for completion in the coming months include a new playground with swings, a splash pad, a multi-use sports pad, a cricket pitch with bleachers, an artificial turf field, a skatepark, shade structures, accessible pathways, and more.

“Today is about much more than opening the doors to a new school. It’s about opening the next chapter of a community. It’s about honouring a remarkable woman, celebrating who we are becoming together, and recognizing the incredible potential that exists within every student, staff member and family who calls this place home,” said Robyn Mullings, principal.
