September 30: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day

A collection of orange tshirts.

Wednesday, September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

In support of healing, truth and justice for the survivors, the children who never returned home and the communities navigating the complex impact of residential schools, the Grand Erie District School Board is committed to listening, learning and reflecting on the truths and impact of residential schools.

Students and employees across Grand Erie will engage in classroom learning, school activities, and community connections on September 30. Wearing orange shows our support, and we encourage all students and employees to take part and stand in remembrance and solidarity.
Families who wish to continue these conversations may explore Grand Erie's educational resources for at-home learning. At the link, you can learn more about the date’s history, the story behind Orange Shirt Day, learning guides, educational videos and an online classroom.
Pauline Johnson Collegiate and Vocational School will host its Annual Every Child Matters Football Game as part of its continued commitment to Truth and Reconciliation. The event will be held on Friday, October 2 at Kiwanis Field. The event will feature Indigenous performers and elders who will participate in the opening and at halftime. The day will celebrate Indigenous arts and culture while bringing together students and community members, providing space for learning and reflection.
This journey is not wrapped up in one day, but rather an ongoing call to deepen our understanding. Shared responsibility, curiosity and integrity are components of our strategic plan, and it is our duty to reflect that in meaningful exploration of Indigenous histories, cultures, perspectives and contemporary experiences.
As we lead forward together, we must carry what we learn into our classrooms, schools, workplaces and communities with respect and action.
