What Did You Do At School Today? Helping New Grand Erie Kindergarten Families

Starting school for the first time is one of the most significant milestones for children and their families. This year, we are pleased to feature the following picture book "What Did You Do At School Today?" by author C.C. Lacavera.

Inspired by her own son, Lacavera set out to capture the everyday magic of early school experiences. Every parent has asked their little one questions like, "What did you do at school today?"—hoping for a peek into their child's imagination and the special moments that fill their days. This book takes that familiar question and transforms it into a playful journey of possibility, encouraging children to share stories while sparking conversation at home.

"I wanted to create a book that turns a routine question into a magical invitation—so families can share, imagine, and connect each night over what might otherwise be just another day of school," said Lacavera.

Perfect for reading aloud, the heartwarming story promotes active listening, encourages storytelling, and nurtures a stronger parent-child connection. It's a reminder for all parents and caregivers of the treasures hidden in everyday life and the magic that happens when they take a moment to listen.

For Grand Erie, the initiative supports both the transition to school and the district’s focus on early learning. “The book captures the wonder we hope every child carries into school,” said Dr. JoAnna Roberto, PhD, Director of Education. “Imaginative storytelling is a vital part of early learning. This book supports home-to-school conversation and encourages children to see each day as an opportunity for discovery."

Grand Erie hopes to ease the nerves that often come with starting school, while sparking excitement and curiosity about the journey ahead. Every elementary school library will receive a copy. Families registering their children for Kindergarten in 2026 can look forward to receiving their copy as part of the registration process, along with a Welcome to Kindergarten Activity Book and Amir’s/Amira’s First Day of Kindergarten provided by the Ministry of Education.
