Grand River Public School Takes Flight with Heron Mascot

Tuesday, Sep 02, 2025

As Grand River Public School opens its doors this week to more than 400 students, it unveils its new mascot logo: the elegant and poised heron. But this symbol doesn't just embody grace and dignity—it's deeply connected to the land and water.

The heron is recognized for its tall stature and distinctive feathers. In Haudenosaunee culture, the Heron Clan is regarded as a group of natural observers, guided by humility, intelligence, and considered to be nature's ally. These are values that Grand River Public School hopes to nurture in every student.

The inspiration for the logo came from Indigenous artist Raymond Skye, whose design reflects both the heron's cultural significance and its symbolism as a guide toward poise and awareness. "The heron is a teacher," said Raymond Skye. "It shows us patience, resilience, and understanding of our surroundings. In choosing the heron, the school has embraced a symbol that connects deeply to the Grand River and the lessons nature provides."

"The heron reminds us of the strength in patience, the wisdom gained through observation, and the beauty of community. These are the qualities that will guide students as they learn, grow, and contribute to the school community and beyond," said JoAnna Roberto, Director of Education.

But there's another layer of meaning woven into this choice—the school's namesake: the Grand River. Flowing 310 km, the Grand River is the longest river entirely within southern Ontario and a designated Canadian Heritage River. For generations, it has sustained Indigenous communities and continues to shape the land and lives of all who live along its watershed. The heron, a frequent and graceful presence along the riverbanks, is a fitting emblem to anchor Grand River Public School in this shared story of history, ecology, and community.

“The heron, a symbol of dignity, patience, and wisdom, reflects the spirit of Grand River Public School," Mark Fraser, Principal. "As we unveil our new logo and open our doors, we look forward to seeing our learners spread their wings and soar.”

With its modern design and the spirit of the heron at its heart, Grand River Public School is ready to begin its story. Stay connected at granderie.ca/grs or instagram.com/grandriverps.
