West Elgin Groundbreaking

On Monday, students, staff members, trustees, Haldimand-Norfolk's member of provincial parliament and community partners came together to sink shovels into the ground, kicking off a major renovation project that will transform the newly named West Elgin Public School.

"This renovation isn’t just about a physical space; it represents a vision of an inclusive, supportive and enriching learning environment to serve Simcoe students and families," said Susan Gibson, Chair of the Board of Trustees, during the groundbreaking event. "I’m proud to see Grand Erie continue to explore new ways to best serve students, staff and community, and investments in projects like this strengthen those communities and reflect our values."

The work will add a four-room kindergarten addition, a new entrance and elevator to ensure the building is fully accessible, a new three-room childcare centre to support early childhood care in the community, as well as significant upgrades to the existing footprint, improving both functionality and pride of place.

"They say it takes a village to raise a child, and it certainly takes a village to bring together the vision, commitment and expertise needed to build something like this," said JoAnna Roberto, Director of Education, acknowledging the dedication of Grand Erie's Facility Services team and the leadership of school staff, among others who've helped bring the project to fruition. "This evolution of West Elgin Public School – with a new name that captures where we’ve come from and where we’re going together – is an example of this vision in action."

The newly renovated school is set to welcome learners next March, bringing together students from West Lynn Public School and Elgin Avenue Public School, as it was formerly known.

"It’s so much more than just square footage we’re adding — we’re building a unified educational community with a renewed sense of pride and distinction," said Regan Vankerrebroeck, Superintendent of Education. "The work that’s beginning here and the dedication of those behind it will positively impact children, families and our entire community for a long time to come."

This fall, Grand Erie will launch a process of community consultation to determine a new school mascot.
