Learn Lead Inspire Monthly Bulletin

Grand Erie Families,

As winter break approaches, I reflect on the many accomplishments, celebrations, and initiatives that have occurred across Grand Erie since September.

Though the holiday season is often equated with warmth, joy, festivity and happy moments with family and friends, for many this is not the case. Feelings of sadness, loneliness, grief, and anxiety can be magnified against this backdrop. School Mental Health Ontario has prepared ideas for students to practice self-care over the winter break.

Last month, we unveiled the Innovation Hub @ Grand Erie, an experiential learning space where students in grades 7 to 12 can use cutting-edge STEAM tools. We also released the Police Resource Outreach Supporting Education modules that are aligned with Ontario curriculum expectations. PROSETM is guided by recommendations prioritizing inclusivity, transparency, and the unique needs of Grand Erie’s diverse school communities.

Course selection for high school has started. The involvement of parents and caregivers is a vital part of the formula for success as young people navigate their next steps. Watch how you can get involved and prepare for the upcoming Future Grade 9 Student and Parent/Caregiver Information Night.

Grand Erie School Councils can apply for Parent Reaching Out (PRO) Grants for the 2024-25 school year to support parent engagement projects, initiatives, or activities. School Councils must complete an application by January 31, 2025.

As we shared last month, we have two new school buildings in Caledonia and West Brant. We are now asking the Grand Erie community to provide input on the names of each location.

This month’s Family Math Newsletter includes resources, tips and practice math equations to support math learning at home.

Recently, we have been proud to celebrate Sara Darling, Past Chair of the Grand Erie Parent Involvement Committee, Lorraine DeJong, Chair, Special Education Advisory Committee, and Evelyn Waldron, student at Pauline Johnson Collegiate & Vocational School, as Learn Lead Inspire Award recipients. All three have made outstanding contributions and shown a steadfast commitment to their school communities, helping to build a culture of learning, well-being and belonging to inspire each learner.

As temperatures dip below freezing and to prepare you for our return in January, we are reminding families of its operational plans for dealing with hazardous winter weather.

During the winter break, I hope you find time to enjoy the simple joys of the season with loved ones. One of my favourite activities is a nature walk on a snow-covered trail. There are many ways to create lasting memories. We would love to see how you celebrate the season. Share your winter break activities with us by tagging @GrandErieDSB on Instagram

Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy every moment.
