Sisters in Spirit Day is observed annually on October 4 to honour the lives and memories of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and gender-diverse people and to support their families and communities.
The first Sisters in Spirit vigils were held in 2006, when communities across Canada gathered to raise awareness about the crisis of violence against Indigenous women and girls. Today, vigils and gatherings continue in communities across the country as opposites for remembrance, awareness and action.
