Secret Path Week honours the legacy of Chanie Wenjack and Gord Downie and encourages learning abou the history and ongoing impacts of the residential school system in Canada.
Chanie Wenjack was a 12-year-old Anishinaabe boy who died in 1966 after fleeing Cecelia Jeffrey Indian Residential School and attempting to walk home to his family.
Decades later, his story inspired Gord Downie's Secret Path project and the creation of the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund.
Secret Path Week provides and opportunity to learn about Chanie's story, deepen understanding of the lasting impacts of residential schools, and support reconciliation through awareness, education and action.
