A Message from the Director of Education, Brenda Blancher

I’m pleased to present the 2018-19 Annual Director’s Report for the Grand Erie District School Board. Each year, the Annual Director’s Report provides us with an opportunity to share and celebrate with our community the many accomplishments, events, activities and initiatives that took place throughout the board over the past 12 months.

The 2018-19 school year marked the third year of Grand Erie’s Multi-Year Plan. Launched in 2016, this strategic plan guides the work that our school board is doing. At the centre of this plan is the goal of Success for Every Student. We are focused on achieving this goal in a culture of high expectations, with a focus on students and staff. The six indicators that support our Multi-Year Plan are: Achievement, Community, Environment, Equity, Technology and Well-Being.

During the 2018-19 school year, we focused our work on the Equity indicator in the Multi-Year Plan. One of the most important ways we did this was through the ‘Celebrating Diversity’ video series from our Safe and Inclusive Schools team. The four-part series told the stories of four Grand Erie students who overcame adversity and challenges to achieve success.

Find the four videos here:

I’m incredibly proud of the work our students and staff completed in 2018-19 and I’m pleased to share with you some of our stories from the past year within the framework of our Multi-Year Plan in the links above.

Finally, the Ministry of Education required all school boards in Ontario to provide an update on a variety of important topics in 2019-20. You can find these in the Ministry Update link above.

Sincerely,
Brenda Blancher

A Message from the Chair of the Board, Greg Anderson

On behalf of all Grand Erie Trustees, I’m delighted to showcase some of the wonderful work accomplished by our board in 2018-19.

As Trustees, we serve our community, including students, parents and staff. We take pride in our role of being the link between our school board and those we represent in the City of Brantford and the Counties of Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk as well as Six Nations of the Grand River and Mississauga of the Credit First Nation.

Of our many tasks, the most important is to listen and collect input from the community on issues that impact education in Grand Erie and across the Province. We want to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation for all of these discussions and for the on-going conversations we have with you as they help us shape the direction of our board moving forward.

The 2018-19 school year was unique in the fact that we had a significant change to our Board following the 2018 Municipal Election. Four new Trustees – Eva Dixon, Susan Gibson, Christina Speers and Don Werden were elected, replacing Alex Felsky, John Harris, Diane Sowers and Tom Waldschmidt. We also welcomed a new Native Trustee as Claudine VanEvery-Albert was appointed to replace Karen Sandy.

We have much to be proud of from 2018-19, as you will see in the Annual Director’s Report. We also have much to build on.

The 2018-19 school year was the third year of our Multi-Year Plan. As Trustees, we take the goal of Success for Every Student very seriously and I firmly believe it is reflected in all of our decisions.

Sincerely,
Greg Anderson
