Want to Learn Punjabi, Arabic or Mandarin?

The following international language classes are being offered in the 2021-2022 school year. Students must be currently attending a public-funded school to enroll in either the secondary or elementary classes of any of the Languages below.  Once students submit a registration form to Carolyn Kelley, Secretary, please attend on the following day that the class is scheduled.  The registration process will be completed by Grand Erie Learning Alternatives.

 

Punjabi Secondary Credit Class

  • Students will earn a secondary school credit (Saturday mornings - 3 hours, Walter Gretzky School, Brantford)

Punjabi Elementary

  • Open to grades 1 to 8 elementary students currently registered in a public-funded or private school
    (Saturday mornings - 2.5 hours at Walter Gretzky Schoo, Brantford).

Mandarin Elementary

  • Open to Grades 1 to 8 elementary students currently registered in a public-funded or private school.
    (Saturday mornings - 9:00 a.m. - 1 hour meeting virtually for early learning;  10:15 a.m. - 1 hour meeting virtually for advanced level ).

Arabic Elementary

  • Open to Grades 1 to 8 elementary students currently registered in a public-funded or private school.
    (Saturday mornings - 2.5 hours at Brier Park School, Brantford).

Registration Procedure


Students registering for the first time require Proof of Birth and Citizenship to be submitted with registration - proof could be one of the following:

  • a Canadian Birth Certificate or Baptismal Certificate
  • a Canadian Passport (not a Canada Visa within a passport)
  • Canadian Citizenship Card
  • Confirmation of Permanent Residence Form 5292 or IMM100 (verified with a passport)
  • Permanent Resident Card

International Languages Information

Program Information

  • Offers children the opportunity to develop and/or maintain the ability to speak, listen, read and write a new language, or in the language of their heritage.
  • Enhances students’ connection with their heritage.
  • Improves communication skills in their language of choice.
  • Strengthens cognitive development through the knowledge of an additional language.
  • Provides opportunities to learn and experience another culture.
  • Languages currently offered:  Punjabi, Mandarin, Arabic.

Important Notes

  • Elementary language program for students attending school, from Junior Kindergarten to 8 in September 2021 using either the online or in-class format.  Students MUST be 4 years of age by December, 2021 to begin attending in September, 2021. 
  • Credit Classes for those entering grade 9 to 12 in September 2021.
  • Students with all levels of language proficiency are welcome.
  • Students need to be committed to learning and improving their skills. Good attitude, behaviour and consistent engagement are expected of every student.
