The SCS Modern Languages Department

Students in the Modern Languages Department at SCS have a choice between two vibrant programs: Core French & Extended French.

In both programs, students are equipped with fundamental communication skills and an understanding of the nature of the French language and culture.

Core French

By the end of the four-year Core French program, students will be able to participate in a straightforward conversation; will be able read books, magazines, and newspapers; will be able to understand the general meaning of radio and television news and other programs; and will be able to communicate effectively through writing.

Extended French

Extended French is a natural extension of the elementary French immersion programs in Grand Erie. Students accumulate seven credits in French: four are for French language courses; three courses are in other subjects taught in French. By the end of the four-year program, students will participate easily in conversations and discussions; may be able to take courses at the college or university level in which French is the language of instruction; and may be able to accept employment in which French is the working language.

DELF (Diplôme d’études en langue française)

The DELF is an official certification awarded by the Ministry of Education of France to certify the proficiency of non-native speakers in the French language. The DELF exam assesses candidates' skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking in French. It is widely recognized and accepted by various institutions and employers as proof of French language proficiency.

Students in both our Core French and Extended French programs are prepared throughout high school to take the DELF exam. Grand Erie provides the opportunity for students in Grade 12 to take the DELF exam with certified examiners in their final semester of high school.
