The newly renovated Library Learning Commons provides a safe, friendly environment, offering a balanced collection of print and digital resources to meet both curricular and personal interest needs. Through virtual and physical learning partnerships, we provide integrated learning opportunities which are global, connected, social, cross-curricular and interdisciplinary.
In partnership with classroom teachers, the teacher-librarian teaches guided inquiry, whereby students learn to define problems, form questions, explore ideas, analyse, synthesize and evaluate information and communicate new understandings. We strive to challenge students to think critically about the information they find, to instill in them a passion for reading and learning, and to equip them with multiple literacy skills for success in life after secondary school. There are feature areas withing the Learning Commons on Mental Health and Wellness, Indigenous fiction and non-fiction, LGBTQ interests and more.
The Learning Commons has 40 tablets that can be used for e-learning, assignments, database inquiries and internet research. Students can use these tablets or their own laptop at the new café height laptop counters with outlets available to keep your device charged. The charging centre in the Learning Commons allows students to charge their devices (phones, earbuds, etc.) in a safe locked space while they are in their classes. The photocopier is available for students printing assignments or notes during the day.
The SCS Learning Commons is currently open each day from 8:45 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Students are able to sign-out books and other materials, like puzzles or games, for school and personal use. Students and teachers can also book a meeting space, classroom space or the new green screen space for video assignments. The Learning Commons also features our new “teaming tables” which allow groups of students to collaborate sharing their work or ideas using the “write on” tabletop and full connectivity monitors allowing screen sharing. Students on “spare” and doing e-learning courses are encouraged to use the Learning Commons to complete assignments and homework in a supervised environment.
The SCS Learning Commons also has a cafe seating area where the students can bring a drink or eat their lunch or a snack while reading, studying, or chatting with friends. Visit our Makerspace area to put a few pieces into the puzzle or create something on our new Lego wall. Come sit on the sofa or comfy chairs and enjoy a magazine, read one of the local newspapers or play a game with friends.
