A willow tree symbolizes resilience, adaptability and strength. It reflects a community growing together, rooted in belonging and shared commitment. Willow Grove Public School was officially approved by the Ministry of Education as the new school’s name.

“Selecting a name is a significant milestone and the willow symbolizes the exact qualities we aim to instill in students as we prepare them to be future-ready learners in a supportive, connected environment,” said Dr. JoAnna Roberto, Chief Executive Officer. “Willow Grove reflects Grand Erie’s commitment to learning, well-being and belonging, and reminds us of our aspirations as a community.”

“On behalf of the Board, we appreciate everyone who took the time to share their ideas as part of this process and know the name will serve as a symbol of our commitment to inclusivity and excellence in education,” said Brian Doyle, Chair of the Board.

The name captures both the geography and spirit of Paris, Ontario. Situated at the confluence of the Nith and Grand Rivers, the town’s natural character will be central to the school’s identity.

The $26.5 million capital investment will build a state-of-the-art Kindergarten to Grade 8 school for 536 students with a gymnasium and library, special education rooms, resource rooms, and four childcare rooms for 64 students. Construction is anticipated to be completed by the start of the school year in September 2028.

“The name reflects both the natural beauty and the collective spirit of Paris and the surrounding area,” said Dina Atanas, Superintendent of Education. “Just as trees grow and thrive together, this new school will provide a welcoming space where students build strong roots, foster a sense of belonging, and grow alongside one another.”

The process of determining a name for each school began last year, with suggestions – and an accompanying rationale – gathered from community members. Submissions for each school were then taken to a naming committee. The committee reviewed submissions and sought input from employees, students and community members to narrow the list.

Notes Roberto, “Thank you to the dedicated staff members who led this process, including Superintendent Atanas and Tara Cronkwright, future principal of Willow Grove, and to the school communities for their enthusiastic participation.”

In the new year, the school will engage students, employees, families and community members to create a mascot and logo that will bring Willow Grove’s identity to life.
