For one day at the Cayuga Courthouse, students from Cayuga Secondary School were not just learning about the law – they were standing up to argue it.
The local iteration of the annual Ontario Bar Association Mooting Competition was held at the Cayuga Courthouse on June 5. The cross-province competition gives Grade 11 and 12 students an opportunity to argue a criminal case before a judge. This year’s case centred on a stolen bicycle, with students working in teams to represent both the Crown and the defence.
“Cayuga won both as defence and as Crown,” said lawyer T. David Marshall. “It was really a lot of fun. The kids were just so good.”
