On April 27, nearly 1,000 intermediate students from the Grand Erie District School Board’s French Immersion and Dual-Track schools gathered at the Sanderson Centre for a concert featuring Missy D. The morning concert welcomed École Dufferin Public School, École Confédération Elementary School, and Burford District Elementary School, while the afternoon concert was attended by Lakewood Elementary School, Walsh Public School, and River Heights School.
Grand Erie received special grant funds from ImmersArt and Canadian Parents for French to offer the concert to students free of charge.
Missy D is a well-known Francophone rapper, born in Rwanda, and spent her formative years in Côte d’Ivoire and Zimbabwe, before moving to Canada to pursue studies at the University of British Columbia. Missy D was featured in the international Francophone music voting contest for FSL students – Manie musicale, which is a popular French cultural learning experience that Grand Erie students participate in each year.

“Missy D brought an unforgettable experience to life for our students. Through her music, she shared her lived experiences, plurilingual journey and messages of hope and positivity for our intermediate students,” shared Heidi Soules, a Teacher Consultant for French as a Second Language. “Missy D’s interaction with students made the experience especially meaningful and memorable.”
Students were actively engaged with displaying signs, singing and dancing throughout the show. Un gros merci to ImmersArt, Canadian Parents for French, the Sanderson Centre staff, bus drivers, teachers and chaperones.
