Annice Adams, a Grade 12 student at McKinnon Park Secondary School, has been named a recipient of the prestigious Loran Scholars Foundation scholarship this year, one of Canada’s most respected undergraduate awards.

“Becoming a Loran Scholar is the culmination of my leadership journey so far," said Adams. "It provides not only financial support, but also the tools to continue growing in the ways that matter: in my leadership and character. I am proud to be part of this long-standing and respected professional community of scholars.”

The Loran Scholarship recognizes exceptional young leaders who demonstrate integrity, courage, and a significant commitment to service. From approximately 5,400 applicants across Canada, the pool is narrowed to 90 finalists, and 36 recipients are ultimately selected. Beyond its financial support — the award is valued at $100,000 — the scholarship provides mentorship, experiential learning opportunities, and access to a national network of fellow changemakers.

For Adams, the honour represents years of dedication and growth. Adams is driven by a belief that meaningful change begins with compassion and shared purpose.

“I think the world needs more people who deeply care,” she explained. “In our current global landscape, people who genuinely care are the changemakers. A deep passion for the environment, human rights, women in sports, and other causes creates change. The great thing about care like this is that it can be taught.”

Looking ahead, Adams plans to pursue engineering with a focus on biochemistry, an ambition shaped by personal experience.

“Recently, I have had family members suffer from cancer,” she said. “Their cancer treatments have shown me the importance of quality research, problem-solving, and medicine development. I have seen firsthand the consequences of drugs whose side effects seem to outweigh the positive effects of treatment. I aim to utilize my leadership skills and future education to advance medicine and enhance the lives of those who rely on it.”

This achievement highlights not only Adams' individual excellence, but also the strength of student leadership across the Grand Erie region. As a Loran Scholar, Adams joins a select group of young Canadians poised to tackle some of the most pressing challenges.

Adams' well-deserved honour reflects the spirit of Grand Erie's mission to learn, lead, and inspire, demonstrating how students can turn knowledge into action, leadership into impact, and inspiration into meaningful change.
