Celebrating Halloween is a tradition at Gretzky for many families. We also understand that our school population does not universally celebrate Halloween. To be responsive to our school's diverse needs, we will implement a "come as you like" style of Halloween celebration at Gretzky. This means that you have options regarding how you wish to participate on the 31st. You are welcome to wear a costume to school if you like; you can wear black and orange, or you can opt not to wear a costume, hence "come as you like".
The celebration aspect of Halloween will be left to individual teachers to decide how best to serve the needs of their students. So, please look for information coming home about how your child's class will be participating in Halloween. We will be having a door decorating contest and a pumpkin decorating contest.
If you would like to send snacks, please remember that they must be nut-free. In addition, the Brant County Health Unit requires all food served in a school be prepared in either a commercial or health unit-inspected kitchen. We are not permitted to share items that are baked/prepared at home. Please also note that baked goods from Tim Hortons are not nut-free.
Please remember: students must avoid using identities and cultures as costumes. This includes appropriative costumes/cultural stereotypes (i.e., cultural garments), black/brown face, transphobic costumes (i.e., a man dressed as a woman), body-shaming or objectifying costumes, and costumes that joke about situations that have caused harm (i.e., COVID pandemic). Such costumes perpetuate stereotypes and can unintentionally marginalize and oppress community members. Costumes that require a complete face covering and utilize gore/weapons are prohibited at school for safety reasons.
