To our North Park community,
I’m writing to address the heartfelt reactions many have had regarding the artwork in our hallways. These student-led murals, some dating back to the 1990s, have become a defining feature of North Park and a source of history, creativity, identity and pride.
To be clear, there are no current plans to paint over these murals. Over time, however, school buildings require maintenance and updates, and some of this work is underway in our school, with upgrades to lighting happening currently. There will come a time when, as a school community, we need to address how to preserve our history while proceeding with any necessary work on the building. I am committed to ensuring that community voice is integral to that process, and will provide an update about any building plans in early spring.
I am grateful to everyone who has shared their sentiments on this. The walls belong to the building, but the art belongs to our school community. Let’s continue the conversation with the same passion, respect and care that these murals themselves represent.
Sincerely,
Stephen Wills
