CO-OP OYAP

OYAP logo

Co-op/OYAP(Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program) is an experiential learning program that can assist all students at TTSC who are bound for either the workplace, apprenticeship or college. This unique opportunity gives our students a chance to explore the world beyond school while earning diploma credits.

It’s a great opportunity to explore career paths while developing new skills as well as making valuable connections within the working community. Students are mainly assessed and evaluated on their demonstration of tasks at the workplace.

Co-op/OYAP students are able to select their placements from the wide variety of job opportunities that are available in the world of work. Some restrictions will apply when issues related to workplace safety are in question. Students are encouraged to search for and secure a work placement of their choice. Teachers will support students needing assistance in searching for and securing a placement.

There is no restriction on the total number of cooperative education credits that students may earn in secondary school as long as they complete the compulsory course requirements. We encourage all our students to include the Co-op/OYAP Program as an integral part of their high school learning experience at TTSC.

How does it work?

When a student reaches Grade 11 he/she may be eligible to spend a half-day block of time (morning or afternoon) working on-the-job under the direct supervision of a professional in the community. Teachers from Tollgate will be in regular and frequent contact with the workplace to ensure a safe and enriching learning experience is happening. Thorough preparation prior to starting in the workplace, assignments, evaluations and a final project must be successfully completed before two credits toward an OSSD will be awarded.

How do you apply?

A student must indicate in February on their option sheet that they are interested in taking Co-op the following year. Speak to your Guidance teacher or one of the Co-op teachers for more information ...

What can you do to prepare?

Plan your in-school courses carefully beginning with Grade 9. Remember...Co-op is designed to enhance and enrich courses the student has already successfully completed. Including Co-op education in the Annual Education Plan will assist with school and career planning.

The Guidance department is always there and happy to help!!!
