What is a Specialized High Skills Major?

A Specialized High Skills Major (SHSM) allows students to customize their secondary school experience to fit career interests.

Offered in Grade 11 and 12, an SHSM allows students to receive a specialized secondary school diploma that is recognized in various economic sectors in all four pathways.

What does a SHSM look like?

A SHSM is a bundle of 8 to 10 Grade 11 and Grade 12 credits that include two experiential learning (co-op) credits.

SHSM at Hagersville Secondary School

Hagersville Secondary School is involved with the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program. This offers students a chance to major, or focus, on a specific discipline in grade eleven and twelve better preparing them for entry into the workplace, apprenticeship, college or university. H.S.S. offers the SHSM in Auto and Hospitality. SHSM students complete a variety of industry training programs.

How do I become a specialist high skills major student?

All students are invited to attend information meetings in grade ten to learn more about the requirements and commitments regarding the specialist high skills major program. Applicants are chosen based on their interview with guidance and the specialist teacher and their completion of the application. The specialist high skills major program requires a significant amount of monetary investment by the Technology Department and time investment by the individual student. Students with a history of commitment and good discipline are given preferential treatment.
