The Grand Erie District School Board has undertaken several steps to prepare for a potential outbreak of the H1N1 virus.
Medical experts believe the H1N1 virus will spread through Canada during the next influenza season. Despite those predictions, there are steps that the Board is taking and individuals can take to help slow the spread and hopefully, diminish the impact. Medical experts, including Canada’s Medical Officer of Health and the World Health Organization, strongly urge everyone to regularly and thoroughly wash their hands during an influenza outbreak, as well as all other times. In addition, the Board recognizes education and awareness are keys in slowing the spread of influenza; therefore we will continually communicate the importance of proper hand washing and sneezing procedures to children. Schools will also ensure soap and or hand sanitizing liquid is accessible to students and staff.
In addition, if your child is ill, please keep them home, that’s what’s best for your child as well as others at the school. If your child has a cold, teach them to sneeze and or cough into their sleeve, not their hands; direct your child to discard any used tissue after one use and to immediately wash their hands after handling a soiled tissue; and advise them not to share their school supplies and or food. Everyone is also encouraged to take advantage of free flu vaccinations clinics when they become available.
It is possible to slow the spread of the disease and diminish its impact in our schools and community, but we must all do our part and work on it together. For more information, visit www.fightflu.ca or the Grand Erie website—www.granderie.ca.—and select the H1N1 icon on the home page.
