Our staff know our students. In an environment with fewer students we get to know our students and we get to know them quickly. When we know people, we watch out for them. We monitor them formally and informally, and we intervene to support them when required. For example, twice each week we run a study hall at lunch. Study hall offers students the chance to get caught up on assignments in a supportive environment. Students are invited to study hall but, in the case of students who are falling behind, we insist that they attend. As well, math help is offered twice each week at lunch and often after school as well.
We are a smaller school. With fewer students to get to know, we know who belongs in the school and who does not. Because of this, and because of the monitoring and interventions that are put in place, our suspension and expulsion statistics are very low relative to other schools. At DDSS we focus on promoting positive behaviours. We are proud of our students, their accomplishments, and their behaviours.
